Thanks to everyone who signed the FoCo Trash Mob’s petition to the Fort Collins City Council asking them to stop the sale of single-use plastic (SUP) water bottles under a gallon. Council will consider doing this, along with acting to align city code with Colorado’s Plastic Pollution Reduction Act (PPRA) at their meeting on February 4th.

Please e-mail City Council at cityleaders@fcgov.com before February 4th asking them to support PPRA code updates and the SUP water bottle ban. A sample letter follows; please take a minute or two to personalize it if you have time.

Dear City Leaders,

I support the updates that will align the city’s codes with Colorado’s Plastic Pollution Reduction Act. I also support banning the sale of single-use-plastic water bottles under one gallon. Fort Collins has the best tap water in the Rocky Mountain region. Studies have shown water bottled in single-use-plastic is contaminated with microplastics that pose significant health risks. Furthermore, the entire lifecycle of single-use-plastic water bottles, from production to transportation and disposal creates a considerable carbon footprint and harms ecosystems, highlighting the urgent need for more sustainable alternatives such as refills not landfills!!

Your leadership at this critical moment in the fight against climate change is needed. As City Leaders, you are in a position to take action that will ensure a livable future for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Your Name
