Salon duc Tape – Proportional Representation – April 14th
**********
Can this reform revitalize U.S. democracy?
At the salon on April 14th, Brian Woodruff will introduce an important election reform known as proportional representation (PR). PR is a democratic principle specifying that groups of like-minded people should be represented in proportion to their share of the vote. It is used to elect legislatures in the vast majority of democratic nations globally. PR has the potential to improve satisfaction with election outcomes at the local, state and national level. The Fair Representation Act, H.R. 3853, has been introduced in the US House of Representatives. This bill calls for states to set up 3-to-5-member districts, with candidates elected using the proportional form of Ranked Choice Voting. Several municipalities have already adopted PR to elect their town councils, including Cambridge MA, Portland OR, and most recently Arlington VA.
Brian is a member of the Election Reform Team of the Larimer County League of Women Voters, and has been a Fort Collins resident for 40 years. After acquiring degrees in Physics and Atmospheric Science, Brian worked on air quality and other environmental issues at the City of Fort Collins for 28 years. Now retired, he indulges his passions for election reform, choral singing, and science fiction.
Salon duc Tape, a public forum sponsored by the Northern Colorado Alliance for a Livable Future, usually meets on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month from 7:00 — 9:00 p.m. via Zoom. We are in the process of deciding whether and how often to return to in-person meetings as the COVID-19 pandemic winds down. You will need to register in advance for this salon here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information – including a new link – about joining the salon.
