Salon duc Tape – How to Eliminate the Corrupting Influence of Big Money in Politics – May 13th, 2022

What efforts are being made in Colorado to shift power over elections from corporations and the rich to ordinary people?
At the salon on May 13th, Owen Perkins of CleanSlateNow Action (CSNA) will offer a look at some of the astounding progress being made at the local, county, and state level to combat the corrupting influence of big money in our elections. He will draw from dozens of major reforms in place and in progress, including recently passed publicly-funded election systems in Colorado municipalities, major reforms shedding a light on dark money and banning corporate contributions in nearby communities, and models to look to at every level from successful reforms around the country. Fort Collins has its own public matching funds program in the works, and the presentation will explore the details of how we can make meaningful change in the way we elect our leaders, nullifying the effects of Citizens United while working to overturn it.
CSNA is a Colorado-based advocacy organization founded by the late State Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon. CSNA works to get big money out of politics locally, statewide, and at the national level and has been a leader in the effort, spearheading local campaign finance reform efforts in Denver, Lakewood, Aurora, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, and Thornton, finding success both through citizens’ ballot initiatives and through city council action. Owen Perkins has led campaigns to successfully pass ballot initiatives in Denver and has been at the helm for spectacular failures at the local and state level on issues including universal health care and the decriminalization of being unhoused. He is an active Climate Reality Leader with Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, a former candidate for the state legislature, and, by day, an award-winning investigative journalist, arts writer, and sports columnist, currently covering Major League Baseball and the Colorado Rockies.
Salon duc Tape, a public forum sponsored by the Northern Colorado Alliance for a Livable Future, meets on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month from 7:00 — 9:00 p.m. We will continue to meet via Zoom until coronavirus variants no longer pose the serious threat that they do currently. You will need to register in advance for this salon here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information – including a new link – about joining the salon. Please note that Zoom now requires everyone using their services to have a (free) Zoom account. If you do not currently have an account, be prepared to spend some additional time registering prior to the salon.
