Why have many human rights organizations labeled Israel an apartheid state, and why does it matter?
Over the past three years, a rapidly growing number of globally respected human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and B’Tselem, have issued thoroughly documented reports describing how Israel’s laws, policies and practices meet the definition of apartheid under international law. Join us at the salon on Friday, June 9th, when Jeff Wright will outline the three conditions necessary to establish the crime of apartheid, describe how Israel’s laws and practices meet the definition, examine responses on the part of Israel’s apologists, and make the case that labeling Israel an apartheid state is not necessarily antisemitic.
Jeff Wright is the founding and now retired pastor of Heart of the Rockies Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He serves as a volunteer Global Mission Worker for the Board of Global Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ. He and his wife have hosted over a dozen alternative/responsible tours to Palestine/Israel, meeting with Jews, Muslims and Christians working for a just and lasting peace. In a recent article for Mondoweiss, an online publication, he addresses ongoing efforts on the part of Israel and settler organizations to Judaize the Old City of Jerusalem, creating what some have called a Disney-like “Biblical theme park.”
Salon duc Tape, a public forum sponsored by the Northern Colorado Alliance for a Livable Future (NCALF), usually meets on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month from 7:00 — 9:00 p.m. We generally meet online via Zoom, but are planning to hold an in-person salon this fall.
