Salon duc Tape – The Anti-Critical Race Theory Polemic – January 28th, 2022
**********
What is Critical Race Theory, and How is it Being Used by the Right?
On January 28th, CSU Professor Emeritus Norberto Valdez will address the anti-Critical Race Theory (CRT) polemic. Norberto writes that for this discussion, “participants are assumed to have some familiarity with recent media reports criticizing the purported teaching of CRT in schools. We will highlight some of the main arguments regarding the polemic, then balance these criticisms with material on the origins of CRT in the immediate post-civil rights movement. An introduction to the main tenets of CRT will serve to focus discussion of the broader context in which the polemic has arisen, such as the rise of authoritarianism, impacts on school curricula, curtailing the electoral process, and dealing with racism in society.”
Dr. Valdez taught anthropology, Native American and Chicano/a histories at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Maryland, and most recently at Colorado State University. He is a veteran of the U.S. war against the Vietnamese people and has used his understanding of imperialism and war to participate in anti-war and revolutionary efforts in Nicaragua and El Salvador. He retired recently with his long-time companion and geographer Dr. Jan Valdez and returned to his native Huerfano County in southern Colorado where his ancestors settled in the mid-19th century. He continues his work in social justice and cross-cultural understanding as a board member of the Huajatolla Heritage Foundation based in La Veta, CO.
