Salon duc Tape – A Well Regulated Militia: Against the Insurrectionist Interpretation of the Second Amendment – February 11th, 2022
Does the U.S. Constitution protect people’s right to petition the government at arms?
At the salon on February 11th, Roger Dodds will make the case that the “well regulated militia” clause in the Second Amendment to the Constitution limits the right of people to petition the government via armed assembly. He will argue that a “well regulated” militia is one commissioned by duly constituted civil authority. In making this case, Roger will look at the historical context of the development of the First and Second Amendments. He will also look at the unstated dark side of the Second Amendment – the use of arms for the expropriation of indigenous lands and the enforcement of slavery. He will touch upon the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, the National Firearms Act of 1934, and then the rise of dark money from Bellotti (1978), and the political power of the domestic arms industry through the NRA.
Roger was born and raised in Laramie, WY, and helped with his grandfolks’ cattle ranch. He attended college at the University of Santa Clara and got engaged with Catholic social action there. Roger attended the University of Chicago for his graduate studies and then taught at a small liberal-arts college in downtown Chicago. He moved to Fort Collins in 2003, and got involved with Strength Through Peace shortly thereafter.
